Google Maps for iOS adds directions widget

The Google Maps team is rolling out a new update for iOS users and for once it adds something unique for iOS only devices. The new update tagged as version 4.30.0 brings onboard a new Directions Widget, one that will allow Google Maps users to view turn-by-turn navigation directions right there on the lock screen. Google decided to take advantage of iOS’ Today screen on the lock screen to ensure that the widget is always on the top.

AMD Ryzen 5 Challenges Intel Core i5 Midrange Market

Few weeks ago, AMD launched its Ryzen 7 processors, which were extremely powerful but not cheap. Today, AMD unveiled details with regard to the new Ryzen 5 processor line-up. Unlike the Ryzen 7 series, which consists entirely of 8-core/16-thread processors, the Ryzen 5 family has two tiers consisting of 6-core/12-thread and 4-core/8-thread processors. Xbox Scorpio to Improve Performance of Every Xbox One Game

During its E3 2016 press conference, Microsoft announced an upcoming hardware refresh of Xbox One codenamed “Project Scorpio”. Xbox Scorpio is scheduled to be released in late 2017. The console will be a high-end model with upgraded hardware that Microsoft claimed would make it the “most powerful console ever”. It will feature an eight-core APU with 320 gigabytes per second of memory bandwidth, a 3-fold increase, and 6 teraflops of graphical computing performance, a 4-fold increase.

GNOME to be the Default Desktop Environment of Ubuntu

On Wednesday, Mark Shuttleworth, founder of the Ubuntu operating system, announced the open source OS will end its ties with the Unity8 desktop environment and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Long Term Service) is to be shipped with GNOME desktop environment by default. Unity has been Ubuntu’s default desktop environment since it was released six years ago, in 2011. In his blog post, Shuttleworth explained growth of products are decided by the market and the community.

Microsoft Surface Tops Apple iPad in Tablet Satisfaction

Microsoft’s Surface tablet scored 855 out of a possible 1,000 in J.D. Power’s recentstudyon tablet customer satisfaction, landing it ahead of Apple’s iPad, which scored an 849 in the study. Samsung’sGalaxy tablets were just behind Apple’s iPads with a score or 847. According to J.D. Power, consumers said that Microsoft’s Surface tablets were tops in the “variety of pre-loaded applications” they offer. The Surface also performed well in Internet connectivity and in the number of accessories it supports.

Gliese 1132 b : An Earth-Like Planet 39 Light Years Away

Astronomers have discovered an earth-like planet with an atmosphere, 39 light years away from us. The planet is known by the name “Gliese 1132 b”. Gliese 1132 b is an exoplanet orbiting a red dwarf star, Gliese 1132, in the constellation Vela. The planet is considered uninhabitable but cool enough to possess an atmosphere. Gliese 1132 b was discovered by the MEarth-South array in Chile. It has been called “one of the most important planets ever discovered beyond the Solar System”: Due to its relative proximity to Earth, telescopes should be able to determine the composition of its atmosphere, the speed of its winds and the color of its sunsets.

YouTube tweaks ad strategy to curb content stealing

(Reuters) – Alphabet Inc’s GOOGL.O YouTube said on Thursday it would place ads on channels only if they reach 10,000 views as it tries to weed out people who make money on the site by stealing content from other sources. The video streaming service also said once a video channel crosses the threshold, it would review the content to see if it qualifies for the placement of ads. “By keeping the threshold to 10k views, we also ensure that there will be minimal impact on our aspiring creators,” Ariel Bardin, YouTube’s vice president of product management, said in a blog post.
